Its collection consists of approximately six thousand pieces of ancient and modern art, of which only a thousand and thirty are exposed to the public.
The museum opened its doors in October 1969, following the testamentary provisions of Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian, an industrialist of Armenian origin, established in Portugal in the mid-twentieth century and who throughout his life brought together a vast collection of art. The building where the museum is located, located in the Santa Gertrudes Park, was authored by Alberto Pessoa, Pedro Cid and Ruy de Athouguia.
The permanent exhibition pieces are exposed in such a way as to form two independent circuits. The first is dedicated to Oriental and Classical Art, with pieces of Egyptian, Greco-Roman, Islamic art, art from China and art from Japan.
The other circuit is dedicated to European art, with pieces chronologically located in a period that begins in the eleventh century and ends in the twentieth century. This circuit has nuclei dedicated to book art, decorative arts, sculpture and painting. Concerning this last nucleus, the works of artists such as Domenico Ghirlandaio, Degas, Édouard Manet, Peter Paul Rubens or William Turner should be highlighted.
