Debout en position dominante sur une colline au nord de la chaîne de montagnes Ossa, sa fonction primitive était la défense de ce rayon de l'Alentejo. Estremoz, qui deviendra plus tard l'un des fiefs les plus importants de la région de l'Alentejo, fut associé à plusieurs des épisodes militaires les plus décisifs de l'histoire du Portugal. Il a également donné son nom à l'un des détachements militaires les plus actifs du pays, avec une action décisive au Brésil colonial, le régiment d'Estremoz. Il convient également de noter qu'en 1336, la reine Santa Isabel y mourut.
À l'heure actuelle, le monument remplit une fonction touristique (l'auberge Rainha Santa Isabel), culturelle (Galerie des dessins de la mairie d'Estremoz, dans l'ancienne salle des audiences de D. Dinis) et religieuse (Chapelle de Santa Isabel).
