The reasons for the construction of the Monastery of the Jeronimos are certainly related to the will of the monarch to gather in pantheon the dynastic branch that he initiated (Avis-Beja).
D. Manuel I and his descendants were buried in marble tombs placed in the main chapel of the Church and side chapels.
The Jerónimos Monastery, as it is commonly known, replaced the church that once existed in the same place, whose invocation was Santa Maria de Belém and where the monks of the Order of Christ provided assistance to the mareantes in transit.
The Jeronimos Monastery is usually referred to as the "jewel" of Manueline architecture, which integrates architectural elements of the final Gothic and Renaissance, associating it with a regal, christological and naturalistic symbology that makes it unique and admirable.
The Jerónimos Monastery is a Manueline monastery, a monumental testimony to the richness of the Portuguese Discoveries. It is located in Belém, Lisbon, at the entrance to the Tagus River. It is the highest point of Manueline architecture and the most remarkable monastic complex of the sixteenth century in Portugal.
It includes, among others, the tombs of the kings D. Manuel I and his wife, D. Maria, D. João III and his wife D. Catarina, D. Sebastião and D. Henrique, and those of Vasco da Gama, by Luis Vaz Camões, Alexandre Herculano and Fernando Pessoa.
