The present temple is located in the place of a primitive church, erected in 1568 by determination of the Infanta D. Maria, daughter of Manuel I of Portugal, on the occasion of the creation of the old parish of Santa Engrácia.
Among the illustrious personages that are buried there, we find mainly Presidents of the Republic and writers. The exceptions include the fado singer Amália Rodrigues, whose remains were transferred after changing the legal provisions that allowed only the transfer to the National Pantheon four years after the death, and Humberto Delgado.

Óscar Carmona, President of the Republic (1869-1951)
Sidónio Pais, President of the Republic (1872-1918)
Teófilo Braga, President of the Republic (1843-1924)
As national pantheon it houses the cenotaphs of heroes of the History of Portugal, such as.
The designation of National Pantheon in Portugal is shared by two monuments: the Church of Santa Engrácia and the Monastery of Santa Cruz.
