Former convent of the Congregation of the Oratory, the whole was started in the eighteenth century by the determination of John V of Portugal, following a vow of that monarch made to Our Lady of the Necessities, whose hermitage was erected in that place.
The palace became the residence of the kings of the Bragança dynasty from Maria II of Portugal, except for its son Luís I of Portugal, who preferred the Ajuda Palace.
