Seine primitive Funktion war die Verteidigung dieses Alentejo-Strahls, der auf einem Hügel nördlich des Ossa-Gebirges in einer beherrschenden Stellung stand. Estremoz, später eine der wichtigsten Hochburgen der Region des Alentejo, war mit mehreren der entscheidenden militärischen Episoden der portugiesischen Geschichte verbunden. Er gab auch einer der aktivsten militärischen Abteilungen des Landes seinen Namen, die im kolonialen Brasilien, dem Estremoz-Regiment, entschlossen agierte. Es ist auch erwähnenswert, dass 1336 Königin Santa Isabel dort starb.
Gegenwärtig dient das Denkmal der touristischen Funktion (Gasthaus Rainha Santa Isabel), der kulturellen (Zeichengalerie des Rathauses von Estremoz, im alten Audienzsaal von D. Dinis) und der religiösen (Kapelle Santa Isabel).
