The National Museum of Machado de Castro, as well as the old Episcopal Palace and the church of S. João de Almedina, are based on a Roman criptopórtico.
The investigation of this building is still underway. Together with the excavations, it is sought to confirm that the cryptorchid was part of the whole Aeminium forum.
During the excavation and restoration works, among the finds, four heads of marble statues were found. These represent Agrippina, Vespasian, Trajan and perhaps a priestess. However, in the rubble, dishes from various periods, from Roman times to the Renaissance, were found, which leads us to believe that these galleries would have been covered up around the 16th century.
The National Museum of Machado de Castro is located in the former Episcopal Palace of Coimbra, Portugal.
The museum opened to the public on October 11, 1913.
The collection of the museum is essentially made up of the goods of extinct religious houses in the region of Coimbra with collections of sculpture, painting, ceramics and textiles.
