It was inaugurated on July 30, 1793 by Queen Maria I to replace the Opera Theater of the Tagus, which was destroyed in the earthquake of 1755, according to the project of the architect José da Costa e Silva. The inauguration took place with the Opera La Ballerina lover of Domenico Cimarosa.
In the same square, in front of the theater, was born one of the most important figures of Portuguese poetry, Fernando Pessoa.
The façade has neoclassical features that perfectly integrate the building in Lisbon Pombaline.
The theater is located in the historic center of Lisbon, in the Chiado area.
