La communauté étrangère dissidente s'organisa en 1847 pour légitimer sa religion car, jusque-là, elle ne disposait pas d'une loi approuvant la construction de temples non catholiques, elle était forcée de célébrer ses cultes dans des lieux privés. En 1865, la nouvelle loi permet la célébration des cultes non catholiques.
C'est un bâtiment pittoresque avec des lignes d'inspiration britannique et qui constitue une raison caractéristique du centre de Valparaiso.
