A comunidade estrangeira dissidente organizou-se em 1847 para legitimar a sua religião, já que até então não possuíam uma lei que endossasse a construção de templos não-católicos, sendo obrigados a celebrar os seus cultos em lugares privados. Em 1865, a nova lei que permite a celebração de cultos não católicos.
É uma construção pitoresca com linhas de inspiração britânica e que constitui uma razão característica do centro de Valparaíso.
